Four-straight wide receivers were plucked off the board last night, starting with Seattle’s 20th overall pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Not only was JSN the first wideout selected, two running backs were already gone before he even shook hands with the Commissioner.
The Chargers (Quentin Johnston), Ravens (Zay Flowers), and Vikings (Jordan Addison) didn’t want to take any chances.
If you’re curious about the environments these guys landed in, you’ve come to the right place!
Every landing spot needs some context.
JSN’s calling card is from the slot. It’s where he’ll find reps alongside Metcalf/Lockett. In Minnesota, Addison looks to fill the “void” following Adam Theilen’s departure (slash) provide competency behind WR1 Justin Jefferson.
Waters are murkier for Quentin Johnston and Zay Flowers, as they’re entering systems with first-year offensive coordinators.
TE TJ Hockenson will likely play a more intricate role next season, but Addison still makes for a solid addition to an already established offense.
In my last piece (which ironically covered Addison), I discussed Calvin Ridley’s arrival as a complimentary weapon to WR1 Julio Jones. It feels like history repeating itself.
Overall, this wasn’t a reach by Minnesota. Jordan Addison fell right into their laps and they simply pulled the trigger.
As for JSN- the world (definitely Seattle) is his oyster, so long that he gets his opportunities.
QB Justin Herbert and Quentin Johnston are a nice combo. I’ve spoken about it ad nauseam, but Johnston wreaks havoc after the catch and thru limited slot work. Those who are concerned with drops need to “zoom in” and realize Johnston beats press + plays under OC Kellen Moore, who will weaponize his strengths right out of the gate.
Newly paid QB Lamar Jackson didn’t have to buy himself some shiny new toys. Baltimore inked WR Odell Beckham Jr. prior to the draft and selected WR Zay Flowers on night one. Why grab Flowers when you’ve already got Devin Duvernay? (joking..maybe).
More analysis to come on this group, along with the day two crop. Thanks for reading!
